Music has played a very important role in the Liturgy here at St. Peter’s Cathedral from the very beginning. The first ever robed choir ( in cassocks and surplices) in Charlottetown was featured here, and there was even a choir school at the beginning of the 20th century.
Today the music tradition continues with an all volunteer choir who sing Mass settings and motets each week, along with Plainsong Propers found in the English Gradual, and, occasionally from the Sacrum tradition. Evensongs have been sung to Plainsong as well as the recent introduction of the settings of Stanford et al. Our Hymnbook is the English Hymnal. Once a year on Ascension Day the choir sing a Latin Mass accompanied by an orchestra, and recently the All Souls Requiem has been sung to the setting by Gabriel Faure.
We invite any who wish to join the choir, assuring all a warm and friendly welcome.
The organ started off as two Manual Hutchings, rebuilt in the 1940s by Casavant Freres of Quebec. More recently it was expanded to an instrument of some 49 stops over 3 manuals and pedals.
